The Oakville Ice Chiefs - Oakville ICE
The Mississauga Girls Hockey League - MGHL - was established 35 years ago and during that time has developed a strong House League and Rep Team program. In 1993, the MGHL founded a team to compete at the highest level of hockey for women. The Senior AAA Chiefs entered play in the Central Ontario Women's Hockey League - COWHL - and they quickly proved to be a candidate for recognition as a strong contender for league honours.
In their initial season , the Chiefs finished the season as finalists in league play. In their second season, the Chiefs finished the season in second place in league play and won the Ontario Provincial championship by overcoming their arch rivals, the North York Aeros, in an overtime game. At the Canadian Nationals the Chiefs finished a respectable fourth.
In their third and fourth seasons the team finished third in league play. In their fifth season, the team finished second in league play and ended the year with an overtime loss to the North York Aeros at the Ontario Provincial championship.
In their sixth season, four Ontario teams and four Quebec teams played inter-league games and the Chiefs finished the season with a 23-15-2 record and a second place standing. In the Ontario Provincial championships, the team lost to the Aeros in the Gold Medal championship game.
The team's seventh season saw a number of changes, as the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) name was adopted to represent play between the Ontario and Quebec teams, and Meray Motors, Mercedes Benz, Oakville Ontario, sponsorship of the program changed the club's name to the Oakville Ice. In league play the Oakville Ice finished third in the western division of the NWHL.
This season, the Oakville Ice will continue to evolve and expect to be strong contenders for league honours.
